Road or trail

The surface decides the outsole pattern and the shoe construction.

• Road shoes: smooth outsole, more cushioning, easy roll on tarmac.
• Trail shoes: deeper lugs, a toe guard and a firmer platform for rocks and roots.

Choose cushioning by weekly mileage: the longer the runs, the more you want. Running shoes usually take half a size up from your everyday size, because the foot spreads as you run.
