The layer next to skin

The first layer decides whether the day stays warm and dry or turns cold and wet.

• Merino wool: warm even when damp, resists odour, good for long days.
• Synthetic: dries faster and handles frequent washing better.

Cotton next to the skin is a poor choice: it holds moisture and cools you. Use one pair of socks in the right thickness rather than two pairs, which create friction and blisters.
