Choosing the right plug

A spark plug is not a universal part. Three things must match the engine, and the manual states all of them.

• Heat range: too cold and it fouls, too hot and it risks pre ignition.
• Thread and reach: diameter, pitch and depth into the chamber.
• Electrode material: copper for regular replacement, iridium and platinum for a longer life.

Hard starting, misfires under load and rising fuel use are the usual signs. On two strokes the plug is a wear item.
